Shannon Godsave, CRNP, Is First in Alabama to Achieve Designation.

The Alabama Board of Nursing has approved Troy Regional Wound Care & Hyperbaric Medicine Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner Shannon Godsave to supervise hyperbaric oxygen (HBO₂) therapy. He is the first nurse practitioner in Alabama to earn this designation, which requires passing a course provided to physicians.

The Wound Care & Hyperbaric Medicine Center is a coordinated outpatient center that uses advanced techniques and therapies to provide the best chance of healing for patients suffering from non-healing and slow-healing wounds. The center’s hyperbaric medicine service uses an oxygen-rich environment to heal certain types of wounds.

HBO₂ therapy is a safe, noninvasive outpatient medical treatment prescribed by a doctor to enhance the body’s ability to heal. During HBO₂ therapy, patients breathe 100 percent pure oxygen while inside a pressurized chamber. The pressure inside an HBO₂ chamber is about two-and-a-half times greater than the normal pressure in the atmosphere. This high-pressure environment allows the blood to carry more oxygen to all parts of the body to repair injured tissue. It also helps to fight certain infections, such as those that occur in the bone. Often used in conjunction with other treatments, HBO₂ therapy has shown benefits for many different indications.

“We are excited that Shannon can supervise this therapy, enabling us to better serve our patients,” said Troy Regional CEO Rick Smith, explaining that he joins Dr. Richard Schloemer, the center’s medical director, and Troy Regional’s Dr. Richard Boone and Dr. Paul Dulaney with this certification.

Godsave has been employed with Troy Regional since 2003, working in various positions. He has spent most of his nursing career dealing with medical emergencies and trauma. He worked for Haynes Life Flight for six years while covering Troy Regional’s busy emergency department. He earned a national certificate of certified flight registered nurse.

Godsave is certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. He began his nursing career as an LPN in Florida. He earned an associate’s degree in nursing from Lurleen B. Wallace Community College and a bachelor’s

in nursing from Troy University, graduating magna cum laude from both institutions. He earned his

master’s in nursing in Troy’s graduate program. Prior to his most recent approval, Godsave earned a certificate from the National Alliance of Wound Care & Ostomy. The Alabama Board of Nursing granted approval for him to provide sharp instrument debridement and wound care Under Dr. Schloemer’s guidance and training.
